Films That Tell You About Israeli Culture
Films are supposed to be entertainment, but more often than not, they educate us and help us see ourselves in the stories playing out on the big screen. If you’re looking to learn more about Israeli culture, several great movies help you do just that.
1. Sallah Shabati
This film is one of the most popular ones in Israeli film history. Released in 1964, the film is a social satire that focuses on Sallah, played by Chaim Topol, and his family as they try to settle in Israel.
Sallah is a Mizrachi Jewish immigrant who is always trying to earn money so he can move his family out of the camp and into a better house. However, because the titular character is lazy, his attempts turn out to be hilarious.
The film pokes fun at the social and political stereotypes of the time, some of which arguably ring true even today to some extent. Ever been to Israel? You’ll love this film!
2. Kazablan
This 1973 film is a musical comedy set in ancient Jaffa and follows a Moroccan Jewish man Kazablan as he falls for a European Jewish girl Rachel. The ethnic and cultural differences cause drama and tension between the families and in the community. Fun fact: This classic film features several popular Hebrew songs that you may have heard!
3. Alex is Lovesick
This 1986 film is a cult classic as it shows Israel and its culture during the 50s. The film follows teenager Alex as he falls for a girl in his class until his attractive aunt visits. Plot twist: Alex becomes infatuated with her. This movie is a classic for a reason, and it will make you laugh and teach you a lot about Israeli culture.
