In the Modern Period, from the 19th century
onward, the literary Hebrew tradition as pronounced in Jerusalem
revived
as the spoken language of modern Israel, called variously
Israeli Hebrew, Modern Israeli Hebrew, Modern
Hebrew,
New Hebrew, Israeli Standard Hebrew, Standard
Hebrew, and so on.
The
revival
of the Hebrew language as a
mother
tongue was initiated by the efforts of
Eliezer
Ben-Yehuda (1858-1922)

He joined the
Jewish
national movement and in 1881 immigrated to
Palestine,
then a part of the
Ottoman
Empire.
Motivated by the surrounding ideals of
renovation and rejection of the
Diaspora
"shtetl"
lifestyle, Ben-Yehuda
set out to develop tools for making the
literary
and
liturgical language into everyday
spoken
language.
Modern Hebrew Grammar
Grammatically, Hebrew is typical of the Semitic tongues in that
so many words have a root consisting
of three consonants separated by vowels.
Changes in, or omissions of, the vowels alter the meaning of a
root.
In Modern Hebrew grammar prefixes and suffixes are also added
to roots to modify the meaning.
There are two genders, masculine and feminine, which are found
in the inflection of the verb as well as in noun forms.
Modern Hebrew has experienced some changes in phonology, syntax,
and morphology.
Pronunciation of various orthographical forms has changed, as
well as the rules for prefixing and suffixing prepositions
to nouns and pronouns.
Biblical Hebrew seemed to favor a word order in which the verb
precedes the subject of a sentence,
but in Modern Hebrew the subject typically precedes the verb.
Modern Hebrew vocabulary has been updated by the addition of
many new words, especially words of a scientific nature. Ulpan-Or
